2006 Jerry Award Entry for
Plateau PC Users Group, Inc.

PrizeUse:

To expand free and low cost education and Internet services to the community

ProjectDescription:

In 2001, the Plateau Personal Computer Users Group (PPCUG) formed a Computer Learning Center (CLC) to teach new users how to use e-mail and search the Internet. Several older computers were donated, and the Fairfield Glade Resort library provided a room to set up our first CLC. We publicized the venture with newspaper articles, posters, monthly newsletter, and on our website. Membership soared following the opening of the CLC, and we opened a second learning center at the local Fairpark Senior Center in Crossville. Volunteer members taught spreadsheets, word processing, e-mail and Internet.

Both CLCs then moved into larger quarters; one to the Senior Citizens Center on Highway 127 South, Crossville, the other to the Recreational Center in Fairfield Glade. Both CLCs now have wireless routers allowing the instructors to teach a class using the Internet in real time, and VGA projectors to teach presentation-style classes as well. Tuition has provided funds to purchase newer equipment, and we were able to persuade the local Internet service providers (Charter Communications and Multipro) to donate their services.

A wide variety of people use our CLC facilities including a student taking college courses, time share people who check their e-mails and vacationing college instructors who need to check in with their students. Our group continues to provide instructional classes taught by volunteers, and Internet usage continues to be free to everyone as we serve these communities on a daily basis.
