2006 Jerry Award Entry for
Manatee PC Users Group
Inc
PrizeUse:
We will use the money to upgrade our resource center. We hold all of our SIG's
and classes here.
ProjectDescription:
Manatee PC Users group of Bradenton Florida collected and prepared over a dozen
computers and
peripherals to be used at the Whisenant Farm in Parrish Florida. They are
affiliated with the Farmworkers Education and Services Program. Member Bernita
Franzel is a volunteer teacher at Whisenant Farms, and teaches English to the
migrant workers. Bernita informed our user group of the farm's need for
computers and
educational tools. We started out with computers and equipment donated from our
members. A group of our members worked on the computers and made sure that they
were functioning properly. When the information on our project was reported in
our local paper, we started getting calls from the general public, offering
equipment for the project. All donated equipment was checked out and turned over
to the Whisenant group for their classes. With the computers that we collected,
a classroom was established and the students use the computers to work on their
GED certificates. We are still being contacted about this project and continue
to supply working computers to the group when they are made available to us.
