2006 Jerry Award Entry for
Hilton Head Island Computer Club

Prize Use:

We plan to establish a reserve fund that would allow us to furnish much needed software, hardware and communications equipment for our local not-for-profit organizations.

Project Description:

This Hilton Head Island Computer Club Community Service Project is a proactive and reactive community awareness program for not-for-profit organizations that need computer assistance and are struggling to afford computer help and training.

By soliciting local agencies, we find many have such limited resources that they lack web site knowledge, mass emailing expertise or general computer background. By analyzing their specific needs, the HHICC seeks out appropriate club volunteers who are willing to help and share their knowledge and expertise. This project directly contributes to the efficiency and effectiveness of the not-for-profit organization.

Here are some examples. We have installed networked computers for the Boys and Girls Club, helped agencies understand database issues, and we have built web sites for the Island School Council for the Arts, Main Street Youth Theatre, Jazz Lovers of the Lowcountry, Deep Well, Life Long Learning to name just a few. We created mass emailing lists and techniques for The American Association of the University of Women, Hilton Head Humane Society, and the Art Center of the Lowcountry.

The bottom line is that these HHICC contributions have enabled local agencies in the community to learn and grow and take on new and even more meaningful activities within their limited budgets.
