MUG’s June meeting featured Children Using Computers—What You REALLY Need To
Know! Local computer tech Lizzz Russell discussed the bill in Congress regarding
the theft of intellectual property, which will include confiscating computers if
even an attempt is made to access copyrighted material. There are a lot of
parents that will be out a computer or two plus fines because of the rampant
file sharing by children. Russell told the attendees about the extent of other
things happening with the internet—from anime porn targeting children, to
questionable chat rooms frequented by children and showed actual material
removed from children’s computers that was quite shocking. She demonstrated what
is going on and then showed the audience how to monitor and control their
children's or grandchildren's activities. This was a timely and important topic!

It’s almost time for the group’s annual summer picnic. It will be held on
Monday, July 16th at the Hiawassee River Trout Lodge at 6:00 PM. Spouses and
guests are encouraged to attend and they plan to have several very nice items as
door prizes. They will also have their raffle drawing during the picnic. You
won’t want to miss any of the fun! Hamburgers and hot dogs and beverages will be
supplied by the club. However, each of the club families is asked to bring
either a covered dish or a dessert of their choice. Their June meeting featured
a tour of the Open Office suite of programs. Open Office is an "Open Source
project," which means that programmers around the world are welcome to
contribute to the code. It is sponsored by Sun Microsystems, the primary code
contributor, but over 180,000 people from nearly every curve of the globe have
joined the project. www.maconusersgroup.org/

include Adobe Photoshop, Microsoft Windows and Advanced Users.
One of their recent meetings featured the Deputy Director for Emergency Services
for Richland County who provided a snapshot of how computers are connected to
emergency management. He also spoke about an online short course in Community
Emergency Response Training. The information includes home, car, and work
