Tampa Tidbits
Just a fast update on the goings on in
my little corner of the world in Florida.
Dave (Doc) Dockery, President
Tampa Bay Computer Society, Florida

TBCS currently has 1,050 members; our free computer repair clinic is finally slowing down. Not just because the snowbirds have gone home, but I would guess also for the following reasons:
  1. It's harder to infect WinXP SP2

  2. Users are finally learning they can't click on everything.

  3. ISPs are virus scanning upstream of everyone.

  4. Vista is much harder to infect - no more rootkits with Vista - awesome advantage.

I continue to look for new things to do to attract members. We've lost free newspaper advertising, but found that there is a local nonprofit listserv that we have joined. Nonprofits tend to have the same technology problems that seniors do, so we make ready allies. I advise you all to pursue alliances with nonprofits.

I am promoting Web 2.0 applications and looking for speakers who will explain many of these apps to our members. It's beginning to stimulate an awareness of profound changes in websites and their services. This is where the action is taking us and I strongly suggest that you all be looking at the evolution of the web. Help your members.

I'm also doing more Vista training - both inside TBCS and also getting requests from other local clubs and organizations. TBCS purchased a new Vista laptop for me to use; it's an awesome evolution for the OS. As people begin to understand more about its features (while becoming less concerned about its differences) they slowly begin to realize that it really is a worthy upgrade.

Hopefully some useful ideas. Doc.
